1. How is admission granted to UG Engineering (B.E./B.Tech) Courses in Tamil Nadu?

Admissions to B.E./B.Tech programs in the state of Tamil Nadu are done by either a) Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA) process of Govt. of Tamil Nadu or b) by unaided private colleges or Universities using their own admission process.

2. What is TNEA? What is the admission process followed by TNEA?

Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA) is the admission process conducted by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu for admission to various UG-level Engineering programs for eligible students for certain engineering colleges (see next question).  The process is based on the merit of candidates in their Grade-12 exam.  There is no entrance exam for admission under TNEA.

3. What type of colleges or institutes come under the TNEA admission process

TNEA is the process for admission to B.E, B.Tech & B.Arch programs for
(i) Seats in Government Engineering Colleges
(ii) Seats in Aided courses in Government Aided Engineering Colleges
(iii) Seats in Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CECRI), Karaikudi
(iv) Seats in B. E. & B. Tech. Degree Courses in University Departments and Constituent Colleges of Anna University.
(v) Seats in B. E. Degree Courses in Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering (Tamil Medium) in University Departments and Constituent Colleges of Anna University.
(vi) Seats in B.E. Degree Courses in Annamalai University, Annamalai Nagar, Chidambaram
(vii) Seats in Self-Supporting courses in Government Aided Engineering Colleges
(viii) Seats surrendered by Self Financing Engineering Colleges
(ix) Seats in Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology (CIPET)

4. Do institutes like SRM, VIT, etc. also admit students via the TNEA process?

No, they don't. They don't fall under any category of colleges/institutions listed in the previous question for TNEA admission.  Most of the institutes that are unaided private colleges or Private or Deemed Universities follow their own admission procedure.  E.g.: SRM University follows SRMJEE for admission to its UG-Engineering programs.

5. Who is eligible for admission via the TNEA process?  Are there domicile requirements?

a) Tamil Nadu candidates and other state candidates who have passed VIII, IX, X, XI, and XII Std. from schools situated in Tamil Nadu are eligible to apply
b) Tamil Nadu native candidates who have passed any of the VIII, IX, X, XI, and XII Std. or their equivalent examination from schools situated outside Tamil Nadu
c) Children of employees in the Central Government, Public Sector or Government recognized Institution,  who has been serving in Tamil Nadu continuously for the past FIVE YEARS at the time of submission of application.
d) Sons and daughters of All India service Tamil Nadu cadre officers

6. Is admission to Anna University via the TNEA process?

Anna University is an affiliating type of University that brings together all the Engineering Colleges in the State of Tamil Nadu under one umbrella to ensure uniform quality in engineering education.  
It is the affiliating university for 4 University Department Campuses (known as Anna University Campuses), 13 Constituent Colleges, 3 Regional
Campuses at Tirunelveli, Madurai, and Coimbatore and 593 Affiliated Colleges (Government, Government Aided, and Self-Financing Colleges).
Admission to its 4 University Department Campuses is via the TNEA process.

7. What is the Ranking of Anna University?

Anna University is one of the top-ranked universities in India.  As per the NIRF-2021 Ranking, it is ranked
18 under Engineering Category
16 Under University Category
25 under Overall Category
22 under Architecture Category
32 under Research Category

8. Are there seats for non-domicile candidates at Anna University?

Yes, Anna University offers seats to other state candidates, NRI, Foreign Nationals, and Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries (CIWGC)

9. How many seats are offered for the 'Other State' category at Anna University and what is the application process?

50 seats (including 1 for Kashmiri Migrant) are offered by Anna University via non-TNEA process to 4 University campuses under the 'Other State' category.
2 seats are reserved for B.Arch. Degree Program.

To be eligible,
a) the applicant should be a citizen of India but NOT a native of Tamil Nadu.
b) Min avg marks in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry put together should be 45% for General & 40% for SC/ST Category candidates.

Process of Selection:
An overall ranking based on the academic marks obtained in the prescribed subjects in the qualifying examination reduced to 200 Marks (Mathematics 100, Physics + Chemistry - 100) will be created.

10. Are IB (International Baccalaureate Diploma) candidates eligible to Apply for 'Other State' admission at Anna University?

Yes, they are. Candidates who have passed International Baccalaureate Diploma after 10 years of schooling, with Mathematics as a compulsory subject.

11. How is admission granted to 'Other State' candidates to the B.Arch program?

2 seats are reserved for B.Arch. Degree Programme in the University Department of Anna University.  Candidates who have passed 10+2 or its equivalent examination and studied the subjects Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics (PCM) are eligible. The candidates who have qualified for the aptitude test i.e. NATA, with a pass percentage in the 10+2 scheme of Examination with PCM or 10+3 Diploma with Mathematics shall be eligible for admission to B.Arch
Course.

12. What are the Admission process timelines for TNEA?

The TNEA applications are released after the publication of Higher Secondary Certificate Examination results by the Tamil Nadu Government.
In general, the TNEA application can be expected to commence in late May or early June each year subject to the result availability of the HSC Exam.

13. What are the Admission process timelines for 'Other State' admissions to Anna University?

Typically Applications to Anna University admissions to B.Tech/B.Arch under 'Other State', NRI, Foreign Nationals, and Consortium of Industries happens in late June / early July timeframe.
